About Lox

When we had our first child, our daughter Samantha (Sam), we decided to leave NJ and build a house in Saugerties where most of John’s family already lived. While building our home we realized there was no place to buy a bagel in Saugerties! No real sit down, quick breakfast and off you go kind of place and bagel shops were a NJ breakfast staple! John was previously a contractor, doing mostly vinyl siding and replacement windows, and Barb was a bookkeeper for Shiseido cosmetics in NJ. One day they decided they wanted to open a bagel shop and work together. We had this crazy notion we wanted to be a “mom and pop” kind of place in our new home town.

We first located the business in Twin Maples Plaza 1/3 mile down the road from its current location, and needless to say, that didn’t work out very well! We decided to move to our current location into the “old gas station, which had been turned into a real estate office” and give the bagel business one last try. That was 23 years ago! We bought the building, added a small storage area in the back and an outside seating porch, which was very popular at the time, but weather, bees and the need for year round seating caused us to take down the porch and add a dining room. There have been several additions and renovations since then and they continue today as we always try to keep the place new and fresh so you have a nice place to bring your family or sit and visit with friends.

It hasn’t always been easy, the days can be long and we are open 364 days a year, only closing on Christmas day. Raising three kids while running the business is definitely a challenge but both the kids and Lox were worth all the effort. Our little town has seen some economic hard times over the years but if given the chance to have opened the same business anywhere else, even if we would have made more money, we wouldn’t change a thing.

Owning Lox had helped us get to know many wonderful people, watch great kids grow up, and now many even come in with their own kids! Boy, does that make you feel old!
Saugerties is a beautiful place, nestled perfectly between the mountains and the Hudson River, the area is growing as more lovely people discover us.
We hope to keep serving our friends and neighbors for many more years to come, and hopefully make new friends along the way.
